Around 200 people turned out to watch Christmas lights being lit as part of the ‘Light Up Llangattock’ campaign last Wednesday.

The campaign is being organised by volunteers from the Llangattock Village Society, who fundraised to put a power supply and 25 foot tree into the Recreation Ground. They’re also inviting people to decorate their homes for a chance to win a cash prize.

After watching the lights being switched on, Father Christmas led a parade through the village, past carol singers at the Church to the Rectory Hotel, who provided mulled wine, refreshments, and entertainment. The Rhymney Silurian Male Voice Choir rounded off the evening.

Organiser Helen Burns said: “We just wanted to cheer everyone up after a difficult year and it’s been a terrific team effort. We had donations from villagers and as far away as Germany and America.

“The Community Council gave a grant and permission for us to use the Park. Llangattock Community Woodland Group helped put up the tree David Taylor Garages donated the lights. Other Llangattock companies gave money, including the prizes for the competition.

“We hope everyone will now join in the street lights competition and we will truly light up the whole of Llangattock with festive cheer.”

Homes need to be lit by tomorrow - Sunday, December 13 - and entrants need to email their addresses to [email protected] by then.
