Christmas celebrations at Hay-on-Wye CP School got under way in style at the end of November, with pupils taking part in the town’s much-loved Hay Festival Winter Weekend.
Festivities began on November 28, when children gathered in Castle Square to sing seasonal songs in Welsh, Spanish and English ahead of the switch-on of the Christmas lights. Earlier that day, pupils enjoyed a special school assembly featuring a question-and-answer session with wildlife presenter and author Hamza Yassin, kindly arranged through the festival. Hamza spoke warmly about his life, his passion for nature and his work, and described how he views his dyslexia as a “super-power” - a message that staff said was both inspiring and reassuring for pupils.
At the start of December, the focus turned to St Mary’s Church, where families and friends were treated to a festive Nativity performed by Reception to Year 2 pupils. This was followed by two well-attended Carols by Candlelight services, led by Year 6 and performed by pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5.
Back in school, the Christmas spirit continued with a packed programme of activities. Pupils took part in Christmas cooking sessions, enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch and celebrated with class parties. Learners also made Christingles, guided by grandparent Rev Gill Jackson.
Fundraising events for families included wreath-making and a Sponsored Santa Run. To round off the term, the school’s Parent, Teacher and Friends of Hay (PTFhAy) organised the popular Elf Shop. This allowed pupils to buy affordable gifts for family members, complete with a wrapping service, all set to festive music and the comforting smell of mince pies in the school library.
The school thanked all volunteers who have supported reading, trips, assemblies and performances throughout the term.
Nadolig Llawen iawn i bawb - a very happy Christmas to everyone.
