Vaughan Gething is set to take over the role of First Minister from Mark Drakeford this week, after winning the Welsh Labour leadership election with 51.7 per cent of the vote.

Mr Gething beat Jeremy Miles, and he will become the first black person to lead Wales.

Now, messages of congratulations have been coming in from local politicians.

James Evans, MS for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: “Congratulations to Vaughan Gething MS on winning the Labour Leadership Election and becoming Wales’ new First Minister. I hope that Vaughan will put the Welsh people’s priorities first and ditch the vanity projects that Welsh Labour have been pushing and focus on repairing the NHS, Education, and our economy here in Wales.”

Matthew Dorrance, Welsh Labour's parliamentary candidate for the new Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe constituency in the general election, said: "I congratulate Vaughan Gething on winning the leadership of our party. I know Vaughan will lead a Welsh Government that is focused on delivering for the people of Wales.

"His manifesto set out an exciting vision for a fairer future for Wales based on our common values - a future where everyone, no matter their background or what they look like, has the opportunity to succeed.

"Vaughan will also lead the Welsh Labour campaign for the general election with energy and determination, to win for Labour, win for Wales and deliver a Labour MP here in Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe."

Fay Jones, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: “I want to congratulate Mr Gething on his victory. It is another proud step forward that our country is led by a black man.

“But we cannot forget that he is the reason why many of Wales’ public services are in such a weak condition. From farming to education to healthcare, Wales is lagging behind, particularly in rural mid-Wales. I don’t think yet another Labour leader from Cardiff can bring about the changes that my constituents desperately want to see.”
