A judge has ordered a man with schizophrenia found guilty of attempted murder to be detained indefinitely.

Robert Jones, who attacked Andrew Burvill, from Brecon, has been sent to a secure mental hospital after a jury convicted him of attempted murder.

The 46-year-old, of Merthyr Tydfil, blamed voices in his head for the "frenzied" attack on his girlfriend’s 35-year-old son.

Prosecutor Patrick Harrington said: "Jones took a kitchen knife and went to a bedroom where Mr Burvill was sleeping.

"His principle target was his head but he was also stabbed to the back of the neck."

Mr Burvill lives in Brecon but was staying with his mother in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, after a night out with friends.

Jones’ defence lawyers claimed he lacked the specific intent to commit the offence of attempted murder because his mental illness.

But the Merthyr Crown Court jury took less than an hour to convict him.

Jones, of Merthyr Tydfil, was given a secure hospital order under the Mental Health Act.

Judge Nicholas Lavender imposed a Section 41 restriction which will detain Jones indefinitely for public safety.
