It was a day of double celebrations down at the Watton Allotments last weekend as the Mayor of Brecon, Councillor John Powell, celebrated the work of the allotmenteers.
On Sunday, August 8 at the allotments on Gas Lane, Cllr Powell unveiled a plaque to mark the contribution to the running of the allotments by Dai and Elizabeth Ashman and to present the prestigious Green Flag award to the Allotments Society.
In front of allotment holders and invited guests including Brecon County Councillors Matthew Dorrance and Liz Rijnenberg, the mayor revealed the plaque which has been placed on the allotment community shed.
In a speech of thanks, Dai accepted the honour on behalf of himself and Elizabeth and paid tribute to the community of gardeners who work with each other.
The gardeners have also supported Dai in the past when he was chair of the society and throughout all the years he has held an allotment.
Mike Chappell, another long term allotmenteer and previous committee member accepted the Green Flag award on behalf of the Society.
It is the sixth year in a row that Watton Allotments has received the award which recognises well managed parks and green spaces. Cllr Powell said: “I am delighted to be able to recognise both the hard work over the years done specifically by Dai and Elizabeth and the wider work done by all the gardeners to make Watton Allotments a credit to the town.”
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
