UK environment secretary Michael Gove has enjoyed a walk around the Royal Welsh Showground on the opening day of the event. 

The high-profile Tory was joined by Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns as they met leaders of the National Farmers’ Union Cymru at its base before touring the stands. 

They joined Brecon and Radnorshire MP Chris Davies in the main ring to view the horses. The Conservative MP is also director of horses for the show. 

Mr Gove also stopped at the S4C stand and the Wales Young Farmers’ Club stand. 

At the YFC Mr Gove met the judge for the Under 26 flower arrangement competition, Chris Higgs.  

Ms Higgs spoke to Mr Gove about the high standard of the competition, whose competitors she believes will go on to compete at the Chelsea Flower Show in years to come. 

She said: "Michael Gove was extremely interested in the rules of the competition and seemed a very friendly man."
