A 4.4 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre near the Brecon Beacons was felt across mid and south Wales this afternoon.

Scientists from the British Geological Survey said the quake’s epicentre was near Cwmllynfell about 20km north-east of Swansea and a few miles south of the Brecon Beacons. Its depth was 7.4km.

The geologists said the quake registered all over Wales, the south west of England, as far east as London and as far north as the southern edge of the Lake District.

Dyfed-Powys Police tweeted that they had received "a high volume of calls" from people wondering what it was but they said there was nothing to worry about. There have been no reports of serious damage or injuries.

In Brecon pensioners John and Jeanie Turnock said they felt the quake at their home in Brynmawr Terrace and were worried it may have been a vehicle crashing into their home.

John said: “It shook the house quite a bit. In fact we both thought something had hit the house, like a lorry, and so I went outside and checked round the back – but there was nothing there. A neighbour also poked her head out of her door and said she’d felt it.

“I have a Christmas cactus in the lounge and the leaves on that were shaking for a good 10 seconds after the tremor. My neighbour said she was on the phone to her son in Cardiff at the time and he said the sofa he was on was shaking.”*Do you have a story to tell about the mini earthquake?
