Chris Davies MP has called for ‘mobile banks’ to be provided throughout Brecon and Radnorshire.
Mr Davies said, following the closure of many local branches and a reduction in hours of some of the remaining banks, it is time to “think outside the box”.
Mr Davies said: “While I would like to see permanent bank branches remaining open across Brecon and Radnorshire, we also have to be realistic and understand where the banks are coming from too.
"While local businesses and local people, including myself, would prefer services to remain in local branches, as things go more and more digital the banks are telling me that it is getting harder and harder for them to justify permanent sites.
"That said, this does not diminish the need for local banking provision across Brecon and Radnorshire. That is why I am calling for the banks to offer ‘mobile bank branches’ across our area so that we can all still have access to the services we need on a day-to-day basis."
Mobile banks have been in use since 1946, when they were introduced on the Isle of Lewes, and are now used in many areas of the UK.
Several banks already use their mobile services in north and south Wales, but have yet to consider their use in Mid Wales.
"If anyone has a specific area they want to see these ‘mobile branches’ coming to I would encourage them to get in touch with me at [email protected] or call 01982 559180 and I will push to banks to make that provision,” Mr Davies said.
