MP Fay Jones has welcomed the news that some of the most vulnerable residents in Powys will get an increase to their pension payments.

The UK Government is working to drive up the number of eligible pensioners who are receiving Pension Credits through a new pilot within Powys.

Pensioners living in Powys who are in receipt of Housing Benefit will be contacted to encourage them to apply for Pension Credit.

The new Pension Credit is a top up worth an extra £3,500 a year for the average claimant.

Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones said: “I welcome the fantastic news that the UK Government is running a pilot in Brecon and Radnorshire to encourage local pensioners who may be eligible for an extra £3,500 of support through Pension Credit to apply.

"We know that many pensioners have not yet applied for Pension Credit, meaning they are missing out on vital support which could help relieve some of those financial pressures we are all currently experiencing.

"This announcement is an example of the Government taking much-needed action in order to relievethose financial pressures facing many today.

“It is clear that this will make a huge difference to vulnerable people across Brecon and Radnorshire and therefore, I urge everyone to look into whether they or their loved ones are eligible."

The government has stressed that the Pension Credit is a top-up for the most vulnerable pensioners - worth an average of £3,500.

As well as a cash top-up to the State Pension, this can help pensioners access other support such as help with housing costs, council tax reduction schemes, heating bills and a free over-75s TV licence.

"My team and I are here to support you. If you believe you are eligible or know of someone who is unsure how to check, please do get in touch with my office. we would be more than happy to help," Ms Jones added.

Pension Credit can be claimed online or over the phone.
