The Senedd member for Brecon and Radnorshire recently visited one of the Brecon Beacon’s hard working mountain rescue teams.

MS Jame Evans visited the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team’s headquarters to see “the fantastic work they do here in Brecon and Radnorshire”.

The service, which includes more than 50 volunteers and hill-walkers, covers large swathes of Wales - from Merthyr Tydfil up to Llanidloes.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, regulations and lockdowns, the team have still been busy rescuing people adventuring in the Welsh country side even though they have not bee able to host their usual events to raise funds and awareness around what they do.

Mr Evans - who provided the above photos of him with the team - was impressed by the team which has responded to more than 100 callouts in the last 12 months.

He said: “My heartfelt thanks to the hard work, dedication and commitment of those who give up their time and volunteer for Brecon Mountain Rescue. They have saved countless lives over the years and with increasing numbers of walkers and bikers we need Brecon Mountain Rescue now more than ever.”

The volunteer-led team responds to around 100 callouts a year - an average callout costs the team an average of £550 meaning that the annual running cost is approximately £55,000.

The volunteers, who attend callouts 365 days a year and in all weathers, cannot be contacted directly but are requested by police.

The group’s teams are made up of a range of people from mountain lovers with years of experience to medical professionals like doctors and nurses.

The team relies on fundraising from the public to assist with its running costs such as fuel, equipment and vehicle upkeep - especially after the last 18 months as they have not been able to host their usual fundraising events.
