A COMMEMORATIVE evergreen shrub has been planted in Brecon in memory of one the 19th century’s greatest musical talents.

A Camellia Japonica, named Adelina Patti, was planted in the gardens of y Gaer in memory of the late great opera singer.

Planted beside the statue of Boudica, the flowering plant, commemorates the life and work of Patti - widely regarded as one of the most famous and talented sopranos in history, known as ‘The Queen of Song’.

Adelina Patti was greatly loved in Brecon and given the Freedom of the Borough of Brecon for her benefit concerts in aid of the local infirmary and for her support of needy children of the town.

In 2019, the centenary of the death of Adelina Patti at Craig-y-nos Castle was marked by many events throughout the area. The Brecknock Gardening Association bought the Camellia which bears her name and has since flourished - now finding a new home at y Gaer.

The Camellia Japonica, with its array of small pink flowers when in bloom, honours the great prima donna and her favourite colour of pink.

The museum has many Adelina Patti items on display, including her chihuahua Rigi, a suit of armour worn by her in Verdi’s opera Giovanno d’Arco, and personal items from her home at Craig-y-Nos.
