Beacons were lit around Breconshire and Radnorhsire last night to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A small and remote upland Radnorshire communityjoined the UK and Commonwealth-wide celebration.

As part of two days of celebrations, Bwlch y Sarnau residents were joined by their neighbours from Abbeycwmhir for drinks and a barbecue before singing both national anthems - led by Community Councillor Brian Rees.

The communities joined with hundreds of others around the country to light a fire of unity to bring everyone “a little closer together”.

Today Abbeycwmhir is taking its turn to host the celebrations as it’s hosted a picnic on the village green with family sports.

The beacon in Bwlch y Sarnau

Residents came together on Aberyscir Hill last night with their celebratory jubilee beacon to mark the jubilee.

Posting on Facebook yesterday, Powys councillor for Yscir Cllr Iain McIntosh said: “It has been a lovely evening celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with the lighting of the beacon above Aberyscir. We could see the other beacons being lit near Talgarth, Bwlch and Llangynidr.

“Many thanks to Aberyscir Sports Committee. and Yscir Community Council for organising the event, everyone had a great time!”

A beacon also also shone brightly from the Black Mountains last night among with around 1,500 other locations around the UK and the Commonwealth.

Stationed on Mynydd Troed, residents from Talgarth and its surrounding area joined together to light the beacon.

Assembled by Gernyfed RFC and Rob Stephens, more than 50 people ascended the hill to see the display.
