Brecon’s indoor bowlers are set to step onto a fresh green this winter as a major £28,000 upgrade gets underway at Brecon Leisure Centre.
Powys County Council has awarded the contract to specialist supplier Greengauge Surfaces to overhaul the centre’s four-rink indoor hall. Work begins on Monday, November 16, and will run through Friday, November 20.
The project involves stripping away the current setup to install a brand-new carpet, fresh underlay, crisp rink markings, and updated accessories. The upgrade comes as the existing surface reaches the end of its natural lifespan after a quarter-century of continuous use.
Brecon Leisure Centre, operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of the council, works in close partnership with Brecon Indoor Bowls Club to keep the sport accessible year-round.
"The existing carpet has served players extremely well for around 25 years, but it has now reached the end of its life and is affecting the quality of play," said Councillor Raiff Devlin, Cabinet Member for Customers, Digital and Community Services.
"This investment will provide a modern, high-quality playing surface that will benefit current and future generations of bowlers."
Cllr Devlin highlighted the county's deep sporting roots, pointing to the recent success of the third Bowls Europe Championships hosted at Llandrindod Wells.
Freedom Leisure Area Manager Richard Milne welcomed the council's financial backing, noting the hall's role as a vital hub for local players of all ages and abilities.
"We recognise how important the sport is to the local community and the role the centre plays in supporting players of all ages and abilities," said Mr Milne.
"The new carpet will significantly enhance the playing experience, providing a high-quality surface that will help ensure indoor bowls continues to thrive in Brecon for many years to come."
