A community orchard has opened in Llanwrtyd Wells, with 23 fruit trees planted to mark the start of the project.

The orchard at Lofftwen was officially opened by Williams Watkins, High Sheriff of Powys, on Sunday, September 20.

Pupils from Ysgol Dolafon planted the first nine trees, with volunteers planting the remainder during a launch event featuring music and dancing from Di Enw and Black Orchard Border Morris.

The project has been developed by Llanwrtyd Community Association and Lofftwen Forest Farm, managed by Lofftwen Ecological Trust.

The Woodland Trust provided 650 trees for an edible hedge, which was planted by volunteers, while Freshwater Habitats created a large wildlife pond.

The orchard will also provide an outdoor learning space for Ysgol Dolafon, which plans to use the site for its weekly Forest School activities.

Funding for the fruit trees was provided by Llanwrtyd Stained Glass Group and Lofftwen Forest Farm, while a successful bid to the Pride in Place fund paid for tools and equipment.

Organisers are now looking for volunteers to help with the orchard's development.

Future plans include fundraising for a pond-dipping pontoon, a field shelter and additional fruit trees.
