Brecon has marked another major milestone in the ongoing improvement of the Promenade with the opening of a new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), providing a high‑quality facility for sport, activity and recreation for residents and visitors.

The new facility has been delivered following work led by Cllr Matthew Dorrance, with £84,849 of funding provided by Brecon Town Council. The MUGA is designed to support a range of activities and age groups, helping to promote healthier lifestyles while making better use of one of Brecon’s most valued public spaces.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance said: “This new Multi Use Games Area is a fantastic addition to the Prom and reflects our commitment to investing in facilities that are accessible, welcoming and beneficial to the whole community. I’m grateful to Brecon Town Council for backing this project and helping to see it delivered.”

The MUGA forms part of a wider programme of investment on the Promenade, aimed at improving public spaces, accessibility and active travel links. Recent and ongoing improvements include:

  • The new inclusive Play Park, funded by the Welsh Government and now fully delivered, creating a high‑quality play space accessible to children of all abilities.
  • The resurfacing of Fennifach Road, delivered with UK Government funding, improving safety and access to the Prom.
  • Improvements to the river walk, including new permeable surfacing, delivered thanks to UK Government funding, enhancing access while supporting environmental sustainability.

Together, these projects represent a coordinated effort by local, Welsh and UK governments to strengthen the Promenade as a key community and leisure destination.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance says he remains committed to further investment that supports community wellbeing, environmental improvement and the long‑term vitality of Brecon’s public spaces - including Powys County Council’s plan to redevelop the boathouse and landing stage as part of its new economic growth strategy.

The opening ceremony for the park took place this afternoon (Thursday, 9 April) with Brecon Town Mayor Marie Matthews cutting the ribbon to official open the court for youngsters to shoot some hoops and have a kick about.

Mayor Matthews said: “Thank you all for coming along on this rather chilly afternoon to witness the opening of this new Multi Use Games Area that I hope will be a key space in encouraging play and physical activities for children and all kinds of groups in Brecon and those visiting the area.”
