The carnival is Newbridge’s main event of the year and takes place on the village green by the park. The float parade starts at the park and goes all the way around Newbridge so everyone can see. This year's carnival took place on Saturday, June 28, where loads of people came to watch. The carnival is open for anyone who wants to come, and it happens because it's a nice thing for people to get together and have fun, people can wear weird costumes and be creative!
At 12.30pm everyone is there with their costumes on and waiting for the judging to start. There are different categories according to age, best wheelchair, pushchair, or bike; there are also pairs and groups. Then they all get judged by the judges deciding which costume was their favourite. The winners then get their prizes, £6 for first place, £4 for second place, and £2 for third place. After the costume competitions, they crown the carnival king and queen. The queen this year was Beth Nixon-Hall, and the king was Fraser Jones. The attendants this year were Aria Samuel and George Prothero.
Before the parade starts, all the floats are judged - Newbridge-on-Wye Primary School’s won this year! The theme of their float was Cynefin, which means a sense of belonging in Wales. The winning float included a castle, princesses, princes, dragons and miners. The parade is led by a starting car and a marching band and followed by all floats, led by the queen's.
Once the parade was finished, there were races for children like the egg and spoon race, running race, beanbag race and running backwards. For adults it was running backwards, egg toss and smash the nail. Shortly after there was an adult's and children’s tug of war. There were also free attractions, including a rock-climbing wall, Spiderman trampoline, bumper carts, bouncy castles, airplanes, giant darts and surfboard. There was also a huge variety of food and drink stalls.
There was also a creepy crawlies stand with a variety of animals you could hold, such as a snake, a bearded dragon, and a variety of different spiders and bugs. Other stalls included a fidget toy stall, tattoo/face painting and a raffle. There was also an art competition being judged which anyone could enter, although most entries came from pupils at Newbridge-on-Wye Primary School.
When it came to the evening people were heading to the pubs where there were two different bands playing.
Everyone had a fantastic time on the rides, watching the parade and eating junk food; we think it was the best carnival ever!
The children had lots of fun on the rides while the parents were relaxing and watching the races in camping chairs.
Beth May Nixon-Hall, aged 11, said: “I was carnival queen and had great fun on the float. The carnival was amazing and I really enjoyed it.”
