NPTC Group of Colleges has marked its 20th annual graduation ceremony, celebrating students from Neath Port Talbot, Brecon and Newtown who have completed degrees and higher education qualifications.

The event took place at the Gwyn Hall in Neath, recognising graduates who studied in partnership with institutions including the University of South Wales, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Wrexham University, Pearson, AAT and LMI.

Among the highlights was the presentation of an Honorary Fellowship to Welsh Poet Laureate Alex Wharton, in recognition of his contribution to children’s literature and education.

Mr Wharton said: “Education is never wasted. It’s important to celebrate your achievements. The Fellowship is a wonderful achievement and reminds me that my work is worthwhile.”

Chief Executive of NPTC Group of Colleges Mark Dacey praised the determination of graduates and the range of personal journeys represented.

“We’ve seen people of all ages overcome incredible challenges to earn their qualifications,” he said.

“Watching their faces light up as they cross the stage - that’s why we do what we do.”

One of those graduating was Maxine O’Keefe, who gained a First-Class Honours Degree in Wellbeing and Health in the Community and was named Higher Education Student of the Year.

At 40, Maxine returned to education while balancing family life and personal challenges.

“I am proud and emotional,” she said.

“When I started, I had zero confidence, couldn’t use a computer, and was ready to quit. But I’m so glad I didn’t. The tutors’ support and encouragement meant everything.”

Inspired by her success, both her daughter and sister have since begun their own higher education studies at the college.

The ceremony brought together graduates, families, staff and local dignitaries to celebrate achievement and the role of education in changing lives.
