An out-of-hours service is set to end at a veterinary practice in Hay-on-Wye, in what has been labelled a ‘short-sighted decision’ by locals.

Hay Vets announced that from the 10th of November 2025 they will no longer offer their out-of-hours services, despite assuring customers in the past it would not be stopped.

It means that clients of Hay Vets will have to go to Newport, to access out-of-hours emergency veterinary care for dogs, cats and small animals through Vets Now Newport.

One person said: “Only a few weeks ago I was assured by Hay Vets that they were definitely not going to stop out of hours care. So sad. This practice used to be a firm part of the community.”

Another said: “Driving a sick animal to Newport in the middle of the night is not a reasonable option, particularly with winter approaching.”

Hay Vets have been approached for comment.
