The National Trust has reopened the Pont ar Daf car park in Bannau Brycheiniog amid a wildfire in the Central Beacons area.
The site had been closed yesterday as firefighters tackled a large blaze near Pen y Fan, which covered around 20 square kilometres of forestry, peat and grassland.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews had been working with partner agencies, including the National Trust, Natural Resources Wales and South Wales Police, to manage the incident and protect public safety.
The National Trust said the car park is now able to reopen, but warned that an active wildfire is still ongoing in the area and further advice may be issued.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the Pont ar Daf car park is able to reopen (01/05).
“There is still an active wildfire in the Central Beacons area of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and we ask everyone to be aware of any further visiting advice issued by the fire service.
“We would like to extend our thanks to the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service for their work in managing the situation and working with our ranger team to develop a fire suppression plan which reduced the risk of the fire spreading further.”
In a statement released yesterday, a spokesperson for South Fire Wales and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters are currently dealing with a large wildfire incident in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
“The incident covers an area of approximately 20 square kilometres, affecting forestry, peat and grassland.
“Fire service resources include appliances, all‑terrain vehicles, and a fire service drone. The fire is expected to continue burning overnight.”
They further advised the public to avoid the area, including Pen y Fan and surrounding land, and to keep doors and windows closed if affected by smoke.
The spokesperson added: “We are working closely with partner organisations including the National Trust, Natural Resources Wales, South Wales Police, and other agencies to manage the incident and protect public safety.
“We thank the community for their patience and cooperation while firefighters continue their work.”
