A Brecon pensioner has raised nearly £800 for a locally-based dementia charity by walking 50 miles over 50 days.

Gaynor Perkins, who is in her 70s, walked the equivalent of Brecon to Llandrindod Wells and back over the 50-day period recently in aid of Dementia Matters in Powys (DMiP).

Wanting to encourage her mum to remain active, Gaynor’s daughter Helen suggested that she walk a mile a day for 50 days, with support from Helen, her husband Huw and family with a donation to a charity of Gaynor’s choice.

Gaynor and her husband Wyndham have gratefully received support from DMiP since 2017 so for Gaynor choosing the charity as the beneficiary was an easy part of the challenge.

Challenges run in the family as Wyndham ran the London Marathon when he was 50 years old, although Gaynor decided that one mile per day was definitely more her scene.

Motivated to support an important local charity, Gaynor set about securing sponsorship from others and also placed a collection box in the SPAR shop.

Just over two months later Gaynor had completed the 50 miles and was presented with a cake by Helen.

Gaynor and her family would like to thank everybody who donated so generously to such a good cause.

DMiP Chief Officer, Deborah Gerrard, said: “Gaynor and Wyndham have been such valuable contributors to Brecon Meeting Centre since the opening in 2017, and we are incredibly grateful that Gaynor chose to ‘walk to support’ the work of Dementia Matters in Powys – thank you to Helen and all who supported Gaynor.”
