GETTING young people to save on a regular basis is what the joint initiative between Ysgol Trefonnen Church in Wales Primary School in Llandrindod Wells and Red Kite Credit Union has been launched to do.

The savings bank called ‘Hadau Onnen – Trefonnen Piggy Bankers’ is currently open to all Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils and will operate on Friday mornings.

From September it is planned that the scheme will be made available to all pupils at the school. Pupils can start saving with as little as 50p each week.

Pupils Tom Evans and Rosa Roderick came up with the name for the savings bank and received a prize from David Anderson, a director of the Red Kite Credit Union, when he visited the school. “Hadau Onnen” means “Ash Seeds”, reflecting the idea of money growing from small beginnings.

“The idea behind the savings account is to help the children learn the value of regular saving and for them to start building their savings for things they might want to buy later on,” said Ryan Coleman, the school’s community manager.
