New play equipment has been installed in a Breconshire village thanks to the fundraising efforts of the local community.

Having obtained a 25-year lease from Powys County Council on a portion of ground next to Llangors Community Centre, a lot of work has been undertaken by volunteers and local contractors to transform the space into something special.

The area now boasts a park with picnic area, tables, and benches surrounded by perennial plants and wildflowers. One part of the park has been designed and planted by Year 6 pupils from Llangors Primary School. The school’s Eco Group took on the task of planning out the space, which is now a natural habitat for wildlife and insects, with a small pond, bug area and hedgehog house.

The latest addition to this valuable community space is a large multiplay area.

Local boy Ryley Reed officially opened the play area on Friday, October 14. Ryley has himself raised £7,000 for the play park, as he wanted to make sure that the children in Llangors had an area they could all enjoy. More equipment will be installed in the park when funds allow.

Community fundraising has allowed the site to be levelled and securely fenced off. A replica round house has also been restored and brought back in use. The round house includes a mud kitchen and children’s picnic tables, providing an area for imaginative and interactive play. These were kindly made and donated by a local farmer.

The play park is designed for people of all ages to enjoy. Visitors to the park can sit and relax and enjoy the views of the Brecon Beacons, as well as meet friends and chat, while children can around safely and play.

The play park is situated near to the newly-opened community-run shop and café - another triumph for the community of Llangors.

The shop stocks all the things you would expect to find in a convenience store – fresh, chilled, frozen and packaged food, and lots of household items, all at reasonable prices. The coffee shop sells a range of drinks, sandwiches and cakes both for seated and take-out customers.
