THEATR Brycheiniog is hosting an exhibition to celebrate the 45-year career of world renowned rally photographer Maurice Selden.

Maurice covered a record-breaking 449 World Rally Championship (WRC) rallies worldwide during his career. The exhibition, which runs for two months from Thursday, June 28 to Monday, August 20, aims to capture the thrills, colour and atmosphere of this exciting sport.

The exhibition will open with a celebratory event on Thursday, June 28 at 6pm in Theatr Brycheiniog’s Andrew Lamont Gallery, and will be followed by a question and answer session in the auditorium.

This event on stage will be hosted by Howard Davies of S4C’s Ralio rallying magazine programme, with Maurice joined by Phil Mills, former world rally champion and director of Viking Motorsports and local Welsh rally driver, Sara Williams.

Maurice started his career in 1972 as staff photographer for Motorsport and Motoring News magazines in London. He covered all kinds of motorsports from Formula 1 grand prix races to sports cars to rallying before deciding to concentrate on the WRC.

This led to a career spanning 45 years which involved travelling to events worldwide in all climates from tropical to arctic. As well as supplying images to many major car manufacturers, his work has appeared in books and publications all over the world.

Theatr Brycheiniog is delighted to be working with Wales Air Ambulance as a charity partner for this event.  There will be a bucket collection after the show at the exits to the auditorium, with all funds raised being split equally between the two registered charities, Theatr Brycheiniog and Wales Air Ambulance. Please donate what you can.

Angela Hughes, CEO of Wales Air Ambulance, said: “We are delighted to be working with Theatr Brycheiniog as their charity partner for this exciting exhibition.

“Our helicopters can be anywhere in Wales within 20 minutes, bringing the A&E department directly to the patient wherever they may be.

“We rely entirely on donations to raise the £6.5 million needed each year to keep our helicopters flying and are very grateful to Theatr Brycheiniog for this opportunity to raise awareness of our work.”

Howard Davies and Brecon-based rally driver Sara Williams will also be hosting a Junior Event entitled ‘A Focus on Motorsport’ for local school children on Friday, June 29.

This event will introduce children to the future career options associated with the world of motorsport whether they be aspiring drivers, budding engineers, designers, mechanics or simply would like to know about volunteer roles, such as marshalling.

Sara will have her rally car at the theatre to talk children through its details and design.

Continuing the Rally Summer theme, Nicky Grist will appear at Theatr Brycheiniog on Friday, July 28 to talk about his decorated rallying career. As a World Rally Championship co-driver Nicky won 21 WRC races worldwide! He will be bringing his Toyota Celica Rally car for display on the evening, the rally car that he and Juha Kannkunen won Rally Portugal with in 1994.
