A British Empire Medal has been presented to a police officer for his contribution to the gay community.

Cairn Newton-Evans, the chief office of Dyfed-Powys Police’s special constabulary, received his BEM in a ceremony in Carmarthen yesterday from the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Sara Edwards.

The 27-year-old, who has been recognised for serving the LGBT community in Dyfed-Powys as well as wider policing, was announced in the New Year Honours List – awarded by the British Crown to those who give a hands-on service to their community.

Cairn, who was among dozens of Welsh nominees for the New Year’s Honours, joined Dyfed-Powys Police in 2009 after he was the victim of a homophobic attack which left him fearing for his life.

He has since used his position and the platform to stand up for the rights of the LGBT community and improve the way police support hate crime victims.

He said: "Receiving the British Empire Medal from HM Lord Lieutenant this afternoon, in the presence of my family, friends and colleagues is truly one of the proudest days of my life.

“Volunteering with Dyfed-Powys Police as a member of the Special Constabulary has allowed me to develop my own skills, academically and professionally, whilst ensuring I get to help others.

“Leading the special constabulary as chief officer is an absolute honour, and I look forward to continuing my journey within Dyfed-Powys Police. This medal highlights the dedication and professionalism of volunteers across Wales.”

Cairn, who leads a team of 100, has volunteered over 4,500 hours of his time to policing. He also teaches in the Public Services and Policing department at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable, Claire Parmenter, said: “We are all busy people but Cairn manages to pack more in to a week than anyone I know. His policing role is a challenging one and he has performed it while balancing studies and a day job.

“He has shared his experiences on national television and in professional forums and it is pleasing he has seen the service we provide to LGBT communities improve as a result of his interventions.

“It has been my pleasure to see him develop and flourish as a leader. Cairn is a true role model for young people and the LGBT community.

“On behalf of the whole force I congratulate him on his professionalism and commitment, and thank him for his dedication to Dyfed-Powys Police and the communities we serve.”
