Police are investigating why a man was found in his flat with serious head injuries after a night out in Brecon.

The man, described as in his mid-20s, was found by his girlfriend when she called at his flat in the Watton on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the property at 10.15am and an air ambulance was summoned shortly afterwards. However despite being treated by parademics from the air ambulance, he was conveyed to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil by land ambulance.Police also cordoned off an area of Brecon town centre behind the Brecon Tap and close to Plough Court. It is not known if he fell and managed to stagger home or was the victim of something more sinister.

A woman living at the same block of flats, which are in the Watton opposite the Peace Gardens, said the man looked to be quite badly hurt. She said he was bleeding heavily from a severe gash to his head.

After asking not to be named, she said: "I don’t know how it happened. It could be that he knocked his head on a night out and managed to get back here to his flat. His girlfriend found him when she called this morning.

"The police have been here all day and I’ve heard he’s not critical. It’s come as a real shock. He’s a really lovely lad.

"He looked in a bad way when he left here. He was bleeding heavily from a bad wound to his head and was in no condition to talk so I’ve no idea what happened. There was no commotion here or anything."

Drops of blood were still in the hallway of the flats after the last of the police officers who had been guarding the entrance to the multiple-occupancy block left at about 5pm.

Police cars and a van had been stationed near to the flats all day as the police carried out their investigations.

Shortly after the man was conveyed to A&E, a barperson at the nearby Clarence Inn pub had said: "We’ve heard that a young male has been taken to hospital with head injuries - but that’s all we know."

Later a member of the pub’s staff said that they had heard "he’s going to be ok" but were unable to provide any further information.A police spokesperson confirmed extra police patrols had been mounted in Brecon as part of the investigation. She said: “Dyfed-Powys Police were called to a property on the Watton in Brecon at 10.15am this morning, Saturday 16th February 2019. "The male occupant had suffered a head injury which required him to be taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment.
