As we get ever closer to probably the most unusual Election Day in living memory The Brecon and Radnor Express last night joined forces with local man Andrew Powell and the popular town pub The Clarence Inn to stage probably the most unusual election hustings in living memory.
Hosted by Andrew and B&R Editor Liz Davies the socially distanced, Covid-safe event was held in the beer garden of the Watton pub and featured candidates Emily Durrant - (Green Party), James Evans (Conservatives), Grenville Ham ( Plaid Cymru), Karen Laurie-Parry ( Independent), John Muir (Reform UK), William Powell (Liberal Democrats) and Stephen Morris, who represented Sam Holwill (Gwlad - The WelshIndependence Party) who was unable to attend.
The panel were invited to answer questions submitted by Brecon and Radnor Express readers, which included a number from local students who will be voting for the first time this year.
"Andrew contacted me last week and highlighted the lack of a local ’question time’ session and offered us the chance to get involved with last night’s event so I was only too happy to sign up," said the paper’s editor Liz Davies.
"Despite the singing birds, the cold, the roadworks and eventually the rain, it was an excellent evening and a great chance to put some of the questions our readers had submitted, to the candidates.
"We had a brilliant response to our call for questions and I’m only sorry we could only put a limited selection to the candidates. I think if it hadn’t been quite so cold we’d have been there all night," she added.
"I’d like to thank Andrew, Roger and Kate, Tin for all their hard work in organising the event, all those who submitted questions and of course all the candidates for taking part," said Liz.
The Senedd elections take place on Thursday, May 6
