POWYS County Council's cabinet has agreed a plan to close secondary schools - but hasn't agreed which ones or how many.
The cabinet was being recommended to close three secondary schools and their sixth forms as well as any unviable sixth forms.
The recommendation came from a report drawn up by consultants Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC).
At its meeting this week the cabinet amended the recommendation to a 'sufficient number'.
It has also supported a recommendation to establish at least one Welsh medium secondary school in the county while other Welsh medium streams will be consolidated into larger units.
A detailed report will be presented to the cabinet in March.
No further timeframe has been announced but its recommended a business case is considered for each specific proposal is considered by the cabinet before it agrees to take the necessary legal steps to close a secondary school.
Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams and MP Roger Williams are due to meet next week with the cabinet member for schools, Councillor Arwel Jones.
