Powys Carriage Driving Group are set to take on the best drivers indoors at the exciting sport of indoor driving trials. Entries qualify by being at the top of the league over the whole winter season at affiliated events and posting a percentage score of at least 75%. Turnouts come not only from from England and Wales but Scotland and the Channel Isles to the National Indoor Driving Trials Championships at Keysoe on the weekend of April 1st. The competition over the weekend is intense as they compete in dressage then drive cones and finally two rounds of fast paced obstacle driving.

Club President Jonathan Rees (Open Horse) and Vice Chair Emily Ham ( Open Pony) are joined by youngsters Emily Curnock and Jack Kedward (12) both in the Junior Novice class and by adults Vicky Kedward and Nikki Shutt in Novice Pony.

The other pictured qualified drivers, who have supported the club and competed all season at the affiliated events in Mid Wales, are Angharad Morris in Intermediate Pony, Averinna Snow in Pony Pairs and Rowena Moyse who has qualified her horse pair and a team of Welsh ponies. Also in the photograph driving at the finals are Julie Wedgebury – many times National Champion – with her team of small Shetlands affectionately known on the circuit as “the flying hamsters” and Modris Kesans driving a team of Shetlands belonging to club member Wendy Morris.

Wendy has brought a pair of these Shetlands to a training day in October so that juniors and novices could enjoy the excitement of driving a pair of ponies.

The club is keen to introduce the sport to anyone interested in finding out more. Helpers are always appreciated at events and for the group’s popular show demonstrations. If you are interested please contact Ann Ham, the secretary, on 01874 690253 or [email protected] .
