A MEETING that will discuss plans to close four secondary schools in Brecon and Radnorshire is to be shown on Powys council's website.

The authority's ruling cabinet will meet at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells on Tuesday, March 24 when it will discuss plans to replace Brecon and Gwernyfed high schools with a £50 million 11-16 English medium school in Brecon and proposals to review Llandrindod and Builth Wells high schools.

They could be closed and replaced with a single bilingual school, which would also have a sixth form. Welsh medium secondary education for south Powys would be centralised at the school. A review of the future of the sixth form at Ysgol Maesydderwen in Ystradgynlais is also proposed.

The cabinet is being asked to approve a strategic outline case to be submitted to the Welsh Government for funding for the proposed Beacons Learning Campus which would be built at the current Brecon High School site.

As well as replacing Brecon and Gwernyfed Schools the campus would include a sixth form academy and vocational college, which would be run by the NPTC college that currently runs the further education college at the site.

The cabinet is asked to start formal consultations on closing Brecon and Gwernyfed as well as removing Welsh medium education from Brecon and start the reviews as well as a review of secondary education in North Powys.

Repayment of a giant £300,000 debt Brecon High owes to Powys County Council could also be deferred by the cabinet.

Other items to be discussed at the meeting include slashing grants to theatres in Powys, including Brecon's Theatr Brycheiniog and the Welfare Hall in Ystradgynlais.

Council leader Barry Thomas said: "We have a number of important items on the agenda for our cabinet meeting next week and we know people will be very interested in the plans for our secondary schools.

"For that reason we have decided to webcast this important meeting and we hope that people will follow the proceedings, either during or after the meeting."
