CHILDREN got a chance to improve their hockey playing at a tournament and skills event staged at Gwernyfed High School.

The event, on Thursday, October 19, involved all the Gwernyfed cluster primary schools and saw the children taking part in matches and hockey ‘skills stations’. It was jointly organised by the schools, Community Sports Development, Hockey Wales and NPTC.

It came after 20 people from Gwernyfed High School and NPTC took part in a hockey leaders course with Hockey Wales.

Following this the hockey leaders underwent a four-week delivery and mentoring programme, delivering fun, inclusive hockey skills and games to pupils aged 7-10 years.

Powys County Council’s community sports development officer Nicola Jones said: “This programme has offered the leaders an opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills while inspiring local primary school pupils the love of sport, physical activity and the benefits of playing team games.

The leaders have been great role models and ambassadors throughout. They are all a credit to our communities, we would like to thank the friends of hockey in supporting this programme and making it so successful.”
