More than 50 people have taken part in a protest in Brecon to coincide with Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States of America.

Banners were hung from Llanfaes Bridge at 11am as part of the The Bridges Not Walls protest with demonstrations taking place on more than 100 bridges across the UK.

President Trump’s inauguration ceremony is due to take place in Washington DC at 4pm (GMT) today.

The demonstration in Brecon was organised by the Brecknock Green Party and supported by members of the local refugee and asylum seeker support group among others.

Brecon resident Grenville Ham, the local event organiser and deputy leader of the Wales Green Party said: "This event hasn’t been intended as a protest specifically against Trump, but rather against the lie he repeatedly said on his way to the White House – that some people matter less than others.

"I felt I had a responsibility to organise this event and show that us ordinary people will reject any attempt to divide us. So it has been so pleasing to receive such an overwhelmingly positive response from local people who share values of justice, respect for dignity, human rights and the truth.

"I have read the reports of an increase in hate attacks, the emergence of neo-Nazis and white supremacists and it’s scary. Trump is still saying he wants to put all Muslims on a register, like they did with the Jews in Nazi Germany.

"At times like these we have to show we are committed to protecting the most vulnerable and supporting those in need. We need to reach out. To build bridges, relationships, and communities so that if others decide to build walls we can get together and tear them down."
