A HOSPICE has received a near £3,000 donation in memory of a campaigner who fought to improve cancer care for patients in rural Powys and Herefordshire.
Angela Lloyd, who died aged 77 at the end of November, had together with her husband Allan staged a successful campaign more than 10 years ago to bring radio and chemotherapy services to Hereford County Hospital which has reduced travel times for patients from the area.
More recently the couple, from Kington, sought to raise awareness of Hereford-based St Michael’s Hospice and the care it can provide to patients in Radnorshire.
“The funeral service was held on December 8 in the bad weather and the church was full but we had more than 100 apologies,” said Allan.
Donations in excess of £2,900 were received at the funeral and in the weeks since and the total was presented to St Michael’s Hospice, in memory of Angela, by Allan and family on Wednesday, January 10.
“We are most grateful and somewhat humbled by such personal support.
“The donations for the hospice on this occasion will go towards extending the Hospice Out-Reach programme into west Herefordshire and Radnorshire,” said Allan who is 82 and a former pupil of Brecon Boys’ Grammar School.
The couple married at St Michael’s Church in Brecon in August 1957.
“Angela was Italian and came across, when she was 12, when her father, who was a prisoner of war, was given land to work on between Battle and Pontfaen, the holding was called Battle Fach.
“Angela went to Pontfaen School, she was a bit older than the rest, but that was because she couldn’t speak English at first.”
Last August, to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, Allan climbed six Welsh peaks and raised more than £6,000 for St Michael’s Hospice.
He has vowed to carry on their challenge, Reaching out for Radnorshire, to raise awareness and support for St Michael’s in Angela’s memory.
