Public toilets across Powys are set for major improvements thanks to nearly half a million pounds of funding from the Welsh Government.
Six public conveniences – located in Knighton, Llandrindod Wells, Llanwrtyd Wells and Rhayader – will be refurbished under a grant worth just under £500,000 awarded to Powys County Council.
Among the planned upgrades is the installation of the first Changing Places toilet in Mid Wales, due to open in Llandrindod Wells. The specialist facility is designed for people with severe disabilities who require more space and equipment than standard accessible toilets offer.
The announcement has been welcomed by councillors, who say the investment will make the region more inclusive for both residents and visitors.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, and Cllr James Gibson-Watt, Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said: “This funding is extremely welcome. We know how important it is for public conveniences to be reliable, accessible and welcoming. This investment will help ensure these toilets are truly fit for purpose and meet the future needs of our communities and visitors to our beautiful county.”
In addition to new disability-friendly facilities, all six sites will see general refurbishments including redecorating and the addition of baby changing stations where they are not already in place.
Efforts will also be made to improve the environmental sustainability of the toilets. Solar panels will be installed where possible to reduce energy use, and water harvesting systems are planned to help make the sites more self-sufficient.
This funding was secured through the budget deal between the Welsh Government and Jane Dodds, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, and the works are expected to be complete by the end of March 2026.
Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, said getting “the basics right” was key to Wales’ tourism offer.
