An internationally acclaimed Indian circus troupe will perform in Brecon this July, thanks to a unique community project led by primary school pupils.
Circus Raj, a dazzling live show featuring acrobats, musicians, giant puppets and death-defying stunts, is coming to Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan for one night only on Thursday, July 10. The performance is part of a special community event organised by Year 5 and 6 pupils from the school’s Mount Street Junior Campus, with support from the Arts Council of Wales’ Night Out project.
The event will take place on the Infants Campus field, with the box office opening at 5.30pm and the outdoor performance beginning at 6pm, lasting about an hour. Tickets are affordably priced at £5 for adults, £3 for children, or £15 for a family ticket, with proceeds going towards the school’s expressive arts programmes.
Circus Raj, visiting Brecon as part of its 2025 European tour, promises a high-energy, visually spectacular show inspired by traditional Indian street performance.
Pupils have been collaborating with artist and YoNight Out facilitator Blue MacAskill to host this vibrant one-off community event.
"As Young Promoters we are aware of how important it is to be conscious of cost of living at the moment,” the pupils explained.
“We love running this community business entrepreneurial project, and have researched that a family ticket for only £15 saves everyone money while being the best ticket in town!”
The pupils will be managing various parts of the event, from running the box office to manning the refreshments stall.
“I am so excited, I can’t wait to run the box office and see Circus Raj perform, see their costumes and hear the band play!” said Edie Sandison-Brown, aged 11.
“I’m looking forward to working in the café - really excited to see the show!” added Barry Woo, aged 10, who said the project has taught him about contributing to his hometown of Brecon.
Circus Raj is a thrilling, high-energy live show featuring jaw-dropping stunts, vibrant costumes, music, puppetry, and feats you won’t have seen before.
The cast includes aerialists, acrobats, musicians, slack-rope walkers, giant puppet characters and a traditional fakir, delivering a colourful, fast-paced extravaganza full of drama, daring, music, laughter and surprise.
Their spectacular and unique performances have toured extensively across Europe, including summers from 2015 to 2019 and again from 2022 to 2024. In 2018, the troupe took part in the national CIRCUS250 celebrations, performing under the name D & F Bros. Grand Indian Circus.
Following the pandemic, Circus Raj was formed and has toured every summer since 2022. They return this year with an exciting new show designed to capture the imagination of audiences of all ages at festivals, melas, community events and carnivals.
Organisers hope the event will bring the community together and raise funds for the school’s expressive arts projects.
The event is outdoors, so attendees are encouraged to bring appropriate clothing. Please note that this is a cash-only event, and no card machines will be available on site.
