PURPLE crocuses have been planted in the Castle Meadow and at Crickhowell High School by members of the local Rotary Club to commemorate the success of the End Polio campaign.

The colour purple was chosen because children in the third world have purple dye put on their little finger to indicate that they have been vaccinated against polio.

Tuesday, October 24 was World Polio Day, an important day in The Rotary International Club calendar. The Rotary Club, along with the Bill Gates Foundation, have been working to rid the world of the polio virus for 30 years. Only Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria still have the polio virus.

Crickhowell Rotary Club has raised many thousands of pounds, through fundraising events and donations, towards the polio campaign. Appropriately purple bulbs have been installed to light up the Crickhowell’s Bear Hotel as the Rotary Club’s symbol for its polio campaign is the Purple Bear.
