SIXTY-one teams will put their best feet forward for the WAAT4 challenge later this month.
Teams of between four and six competitors can choose between either a 30km or 40km route which this year has been revised, making it easier to monitor safety.
The WAAT4 challenge is a navigation event held in the Brecon Beacons National Park and is organised by a small team of staff from Dyfed-Powys Police supported by volunteers, members of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Wales Air Ambulance.
This is the eighth year the challenge has taken place and includes teams from all over the UK, including two teams that have members with disabilities. One of the team members will also be taking part on crutches.
Gary Phillpott, the main event organiser, said that although the main reason behind the challenge is to raise money for charity it’s also about having fun.
"We want people to have fun taking part in a worthwhile event while providing money for very worthwhile charities. It also helps people work as a team under pressure in an arduous environment.
"Each team must consist of a navigator and two check navigators who should be able to read a map and the teams can be made up of male, female or mixed. On Saturday, June 18, the teams taking part in the 40k route will start at 7am while those doing the slightly shorter 30k route will start at 8am."
The cost to enter for a team of four is £100 with an extra £25 per head added on for extra members. This covers the costs of infrastructure, food, t-shirts and the BBQ that follows the event.
So far, over the last seven years, the WAAT4 has raised almost £250,000 for charities such as Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, Wales Air Ambulance, the Teenage Cancer Trust, Pc Rathbones Blue Light Fund, Help the Heroes and many other local causes.
Gary said: "This year's charities again include Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Wales Air Ambulance as well as Ty Hafan, Penmaes School, Combat Stress, The Bracken Trust and BCA independent Advocacy Services.
"We get a great deal of support from our sponsors who help with running costs and by donating water and other items we couldn’t hold the day without. We are lucky to be supported by Landmarc Support Serves, Brecon Carreg, Dyfed-Powys police, Brecon RFC, View Web Design, Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner, Likes Land Rover, Strongman Supplements, B Jenkins and Sons Ltd, Owen Sports, EDf Energy, RWS Consulting and Matthews Jeweller.
"We are always looking for more sponsors so that we can raise even more money than we already do so please get in touch if you think you can help."
If you are interested in taking part in the event it’s not too late to join up or if you’d like to donate to the WAAT4 challenge visit www.waat4.co.uk or at Barclays Bank in Brecon.
