NEW recycling containers and wheelie bins are to be delivered to homes in Llanwrtyd and Builth Wells from the week beginning Monday, March 19.

The villages of Beulah, Cilmery, Erwood, Garth and Llangammarch Wells are also included in the latest roll out of Powys County Council's revamped kerbside recycling collections.

It is expected to take a fortnight to complete the deliveries and the new weekly recycling and fortnightly rubbish collections will start from the week beginning Monday, April 2.

Householders will be given three recycling boxes - a red box for cans and plastic, a blue box for paper and card and an aqua box for glass. They will also receive a small kitchen caddy for food waste with compostable liners and a larger lockable caddy for outside storage.

Black wheelie bin for non-recyclable rubbish are also being delivered to homes and will be collected once a fortnight.

Residents who live in accommodation unsuited for wheelie bins such as flats will be given purple refuse bags instead. Powys County Council says it has made the decision on whether a home receives a wheelie bin or bags after making an initial property assessment.

Assisted collections where applicable, will also be offered to qualifying households.

A collection calendar highlighting the different weeks will also be delivered, along with a comprehensive recycling guide.

Councillor Ken Harris, cabinet member for waste and recycling said: "Powys County Council are trying to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle as much as they can and reduce the amount of waste going needlessly into landfill sites.

"We are committed to reaching our 52 per cent recycling target during 2012/13, and there is also a huge economical benefit as it currently costs us around £120 per tonne to tip rubbish into landfill.

"The containers have worked well elsewhere in the county and I'm sure the residents affected will give them a try and find themselves recycling much more."
