A Pencelli resident has raised concerns over what they believe is regular drink driving taking place in the village.

In an anonymous letter received by The Brecon and Radnor Express, the individual said: “I write to make you aware of serious concerns regarding the increasing drink driving that occurs in the village and surrounding roads of Pencelli.

“The problem is now of monumental proportions and is taking place each week. Friday appears to be the highlight of the week when tens of work vehicles, some with large trailers descend on the village. They are seen drinking in the local pub for a considerable time before departing after consuming an amount of alcohol which would cause the average man to wobble. Such is their complacency and arrogance that they feel confident enough to leave their vehicles strewn across the village blocking access and visibility for residents.

“The issue is not limited to Friday nights. We witness regular vehicles parking on the road whilst their drivers visit the pub for a considerable period of time. This happens on all days and times of the week. Some are in cars; others are in vans.

“The reason for my communication is that this behaviour will inevitably lead to an accident. How serious this will be or when it will happen is unknown. However, it is avoidable. This behaviour should not be tolerated and is, illegal.

“This issue has fast become a talking point amongst many residents of both Pencelli and Talybont-on-Usk. I have complained about this issue in past years and other residents have complained using Crime Stoppers more recently. Our voices have been ignored.

“I hope you accept my letter as it is intended. A local resident fearful of the consequences of drink drivers.”

The pub declined to make a comment, and Dyfed-Powys Police have been approached for a comment.
