THE Rotary Club of Brecon held its annual Caledonian Market on Saturday, November 4 and it was once again a resounding success.

Club President, Owen Hughes, thanks everyone who supported the Caledonian Market, either by donating items, assisting with the collection, staffing the stalls, purchasing items on the day, or delivering large items to purchaser’s homes.

Due to the generosity of all donors, volunteer helpers and purchasers, the Rotary Club of Brecon this year had its best result ever, raising in excess of £11,500, which it will use to support various charities and other worthwhile causes in the coming year. Obviously only having a relatively short selling time, many of the items donated are not sold. However, virtually everything left over is given to other charities for sale through their shops, enabling them to raise funds for their activities.

A couple of weeks later, Brecon Rotarians had a stall for the Brecon With Bells On festivities on Saturday, 18 November. Despite the wet weather, the wishing well proved to be a big draw amongst adults as well as children !

On Monday, 27 November, members welcomed Gaynor Madgwick to their meeting, to tell her story of surviving the Aberfan disaster.

It was harrowing to hear her story of the eventful day and her struggles since, but motivating to hear how she has managed to overcome so many obstacles.

We will be holding our Christmas Singalong again this year, at Brecon Cathedral on Monday 18th December, starting at 7.30 pm. The singing will be led by the Alive & Kickin’ Choir accompanied by Maisie O’Shea and Tomos Jones. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

A collection will be made in aid of Brecon Cathedral. Pilgrims Restaurant will be open for supper before or for mulled wine afterwards.
