A home development store in Rhayader has won an award for its budget Christmas advert which took on shopping giants such as John Lewis and M&S.

Hafod Hardware, on East Street, won the Marketing Initiative category at the National DIY Week Awards which was held at the Park Plaza in London last Friday.

The shop was one of the two finalists for their "Deliver Magic" Christmas advert against Perrywood Garden Centre which staff described as "very stiff competition".

Tom Jones, 28, who works at the store which is owned by his grandparents Alan and Pauline Lewis, made the Christmas advert with his filmmaker friend Josh Holdaway who now lives in Austria.

The father-of-one attended the ceremony with his wife Laura while his grandparents stayed behind to look after the shop.

The shop gained fans as their Christmas advert, which stacked up over 500,000 online views, was featured on national news across the county with their £7 budget vs the whopping £7million John Lewis Christmas advert budget which was compared to David and Goliath by viewers.

Tom said that the event, which was hosted by comedian Marcus Brigstoke, was a fantastic experience.

He said: "We went down there with no expectations other than enjoying our day out and getting dressed up for the occasion.

"When we were announced as winners we couldn’t believe it. We were probably the smallest business attending the event and we were brushing shoulders with the likes of Dulux and Bosche.

"It really was a true underdog story and we were so pleased to put ourselves, Rhayader and Mid-Wales on the map.

"The rest of the event was a bit of a blur as we were too busy messaging family and friends to tell them our news.

"It was so nice to tell my Grandparents we won, as I know they are both very proud of the whole venture and the exposure it has brought our business."

Tom said they had then spent the rest of the night "celebrating with a few cocktails in Soho" and that they "savoured every minute" of the day.
