ROAD closure fees will be waived by Powys council to allow residents to hold street parties to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, events will take place between Friday May 8, which has now been made a bank holiday, and Sunday May 10 this year.
Residents are being encouraged to hold street parties and events to mark the anniversary and Brecon St John’s ward councillor Matthew Dorrance has said Powys County Council has agreed to his request that its usual fee for road closures be waived for that weekend.
The Labour councillor said: "I am really pleased that Powys County Council has agreed to waive this charge and enable communities across Powys to come together and mark this important anniversary.
“Families across Powys will have been touched by the Second World War and this 75th anniversary of VE Day is a special moment for us to come together, remember the courageous sacrifice of the fallen and celebrate, as people did at the time, the arrival of peace in Europe.”
Cllr Dorrance had submitted a question to Cllr Heulwen Hulme, the cabinet member for the environment, asking if the fees could be waived.
Cllr Hulme confirmed the council will waive the charge and said the council will, in the new year, publicise how organisers can apply for the road closures.
