Team Chafing the Dream have crossed the finish line of the January Rickshaw Run in India.
Owain Turner and Matt Morris from Talgarth with their friend James Taylor from the Bridgend area spent 14 days travelling from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan to Fort Kochi, Kerala to fundraise for Brecon Mountain Rescue Team.
With their rickshaw, known locally as an auto-rickshaw as its not cycle-powered and which they affectionately named ‘Mavis’, they crossed the finish line yesterday having towed a Japanese team who had broken down for the last half a mile.
Yesterday, Owain said: “We bush camped last night, alongside an estuary 500 metres from the sea, with fishing boats going up and down unlit, which are basically dugout canoes, net fishing for prawns.
“We entertained a fisherman for a couple of hours once he rumbled us, but we didn’t get a lot of sleep.
“We took all the back lanes for 40 miles from the north along the shoreline until we hit the queue to the ferry along with 15 or so other teams already in the queue.”
The team made their own route to get to the finish line, including a small ferry crossing, after it started on January 2.
The team left the UK to head to India on Boxing Day, arriving on January 28, before they spent the new year there.
Owain, 51, said: “It feels emotional to say goodbye to Mavis our rickshaw. It’s weird not to be self-sufficient and we now have to rely on other Tuktuk s to pick us up to go places.”
The three men who celebrated by going to an event party will be back in the UK on Thursday, January 23.
Team Chafing the Dream has so far raised over £1,722 and it has posted regular updates to its Facebook page Tuk Tuk India 2020 'Chafing the Dream'.
It is not too late to donate to their Just Giving page which can be found by clicking here.
