PLUMMETING temperatures and some snowfall caused power cuts in mid and south Wales and shut the A470 overnight at Storey Arms.
Substantial snow was recorded in the Brecon Beacons and Radnorshire. Some significant snowfall was also recorded in the Sennybridge area.
Dyfed-Powys Police said the A470 was temporarily shut overnight but has now reopened. However Sgt Owen Dillon issued a warning to motorists about their behaviour at the popular tourist site. He said: “A bit of snow makes people behave in an unbelievable way. There are solid white lines, clear way signs, police no parking cones and black and white cones to improve visibility of the road, but all this is being ignored and people are parking dangerously putting other vehicles and pedestrians at risk.“I’ve two traffic units policing less than a 1km stretch of road, taking them away from any other areas of roads policing.“I have personally issued nine tickets to the most dangerously parked cars today and more will be issued if required. We’re not out there to fine people, we’re doing all we can to work with our partners to prevent collisions and casualties. If people choose to constantly ignore our warnings, in some cases there is no option but to give a fine.”
Energy provider Western Distribution said the worst power cuts were in South Wales, particularly around Chepstow and in Monmouthshire, with an area of Abergavenny also affected.
A further yellow weather alert for ice covering the whole of Wales has been issued by the Met Office from 4pm this evening until 11am tomorrow (Thursday, December 28).
