Aiden Boka, a 12-year-old boy from Brecon, has completed his 111-mile distance swim from his home to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he undergoes treatment for a lifelong liver condition.
Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe MP David Chadwick congratulated Aiden on his achievement.
Aiden’s condition sometimes makes it difficult for him to walk and on his toughest days, even going for a walk can feel impossible., meaning he has to use a wheelchair but he still enjoys staying active and even riding his bike.
Another one of Aiden’s passions is swimming, and he came up with the idea to swim the distance between his home in Brecon and Birmingham Children’s Hospital in order to raise enough money for him and his family to purchase a special attachment that will transform his wheelchair into an electric bike, allowing him to enjoy playing with his friends.
During his swim challenge, Aiden reached the amount needed to buy the bike attachment and from this point on he decided he would raise money for three charities that have helped shape his journey.
Coming towards the end of the challenge, a celebratory swim was planned at Brecon Leisure Centre for Aiden to complete his final few lengths with his friends and family.
Thanks to everyone’s generosity, Aiden has been able to donate £500 each to Whizz-Kidz, Accessibility Powys, and Brecon District Swimming Club.
Aiden’s Mum, Annabelle Ellis said: “This wasn’t just about swimming lengths. Aiden took on this challenge while managing a rare liver condition and clotting disorder. He swam 7,145 lengths of the pool over several months — pushing through fatigue, hospital visits, and everything life threw at him. And he never gave up.
“We celebrated the end of the challenge at Brecon Leisure Centre, and it was an emotional, unforgettable day. Aiden made his final splash surrounded by family, friends, and supporters — and to top it all off, he received a special award from David Chadwick, given on behalf of all the amazing people and sponsors who have supported him from start to finish.
“This story is about more than just miles — it’s about resilience, community, and proving what’s possible when people come together to support a child with big dreams.”
MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe David Chadwick congratulated Aiden and presented him with a special award. He said: “You (Aiden) have showed lots of guts and moral virtues with your selflessness to raise funds for other people who need it.”
Supported by his family, Aiden swam over 7,000 lengths of the pool and completed around 50 lengths each night. Mum, Annabelle Ellis previously told the Brecon & Radnor Express: “Aiden decided he could do a swim because he’s good at swimming. In a swimming pool he becomes a different person because the weight on your body changes.
“He said to me at the start, ‘I could swim to hospital’ and I told him that’s crazy you can’t do that, maybe you could swim the distance to Cardiff Hospital, and he went ‘no I want to challenge myself and I’m going to swim to Birmingham.’
“I was pretty flabbergasted.”
