A STAGE of the leading women’s professional cycling race in the UK is to take place in Powys in June.
Powys County Council is holding a launch meeting on Tuesday (April 16) which explains the route Stage Five of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour Race will follow when it comes to the county on Friday, June 14.
It is expected that the race will follow a route in the Knighton, Dolfor and Presteigne area, although it has not yet been revealed if the race will start or finish in the county or how far the cyclists will ride.
The stage is the fifth of six stages in this year’s race.
Last year the race was won by American, Coryn Riviera of Team Sunweb.
Powys council leader Rosemarie Harris said: “We’ve invited a stage of the Cycling Tour to Powys. They have said that they will come and this will be taking place in June. There will be one stage in Powys and will most likely take place around Knighton, Dolfor, Presteigne that sort of area.
“So there will be quite a lot of focus on Powys.”
A spokesman for Powys County Council, said that the launch event would be: “A chance to hear about the Tour and to find out the potential benefits that hosting the event will have for Powys.”
A spokesman for OVO Energy Women’s tour said that all will be revealed bout where the racing will take place at the launch event on Tuesday, April 16.
The OVO Energy Women’s Tour is Britain’s most prestigious stage race due to its status as a UCI Women’s World Tour event.
And as is one of only seven multi-day races to be categorised in the highest ranking available by the sport’s governing body.
Launched in 2014, the event has been won by the likes Lizzie Deignan and Marianne Vos, and is regarded by riders, teams and officials as one of, if not the leading professional women’s stage race on the calendar.
The 2019 OVO Energy Women’s Tour will begin in Suffolk on Monday, June 10.
