Despite the inevitable heat, Ysgol Calon Cymru has managed to ensure that its annual Sports Day was memorable for all, writes Bronwen Beavan.

Hundreds of pupils from both the Builth Wells and Llandrindod campuses took to the outdoors on Monday, June 30 and combated rising temperatures in order to experience a day full of fun, laughter and the need to cool down.

Several competitions were separated between both sites during the day, and these included the infamous track races. Whilst some were prepared to sprint for their lives in the 100m, others planned on taking things slightly slower in the longer events.

Participants were also taken on a trip down memory lane with the opportunity to take part in the Ol’School Tri Race, where they were required to take on some primary school favourites, including the egg and spoon and sack competitions.

Unfortunately, it was not all sunshine and lollypops after the 1500m was called off due to weather conditions. But in true team spirit, teachers and students banded together and allowed extras within certain competitions to make up for it. This was especially seen during the big Tug of War finale at the end, with a vast majority of adults and children alike pulling as if their lives depended on it in the hope of ending the six hours with a bang.

Throughout the day, an incredible team of PE teachers and student sports leaders were kept busy on the sidelines. Drinks stands were thankfully on offer where a selection of lemonade and cola ensured that everyone was kept hydrated. Next door was a face painting stand, and both were set up by Year 10 students in order to begin raising money for their prom next year.

The results were announced to students via email, with the Red team clawing their way back to victory this year after narrowly losing out to the Greens in 2024.
