SUPPORTERS have been urged to fight for the future of a closure listed village primary school in East Radnorshire.

Powys County Council says it intends closing Whitton (Aided) School, near Presteigne, to reduce surplus primary school places in the school catchment area.

A consultation on the council's proposal is running until April 11 and more than 90 people attended a public meeting at Whitton Community Hall.

Graham Skipworth, chairman of the 21 pupil school's governing body, said: "We have a fight on our hands but with a good community spirit and all the support for the school we have a chance to save it."

Whitton School can trace its history back to 1724 and is thought to be the oldest non-denominational aided school in England and Wales.
