Jon Williams stepped down as mayor and chairman of Llandrindod Wells Town Council at last night’s full council meeting.
Councillor Williams announced his decision publicly at the meeting before posting it online yesterday evening however he said he will continue to serve on Powys County Council.
Cllr Williams, who was mayor for three years and on the town council for six years, said he joined the town council to help the town but he does not feel the town council puts the town first any longer.
He said: “I’m from Llandrindod Wells, born and bred. I really only joined to improve the town and do my best for the community, and make it better for future generations.”
Cllr Williams, 49, posted his decision to step down on both Facebook and Twitter.
In the post he said: “It’s with sadness that I announce that tonight I have stood down as mayor, chairman and member of Llandrindod Wells town council.
“It has been an honour to serve this fantastic town as your Mayor for 3 years. I could no longer stay in an organisation that in my opinion does not put our town first.
“A lot has gone on in the last 12 months, but if the town council won’t put its own house in order I can no longer be part of it.
“I’ll still be around doing things for the benefit of town and will carry on as County Councillor.
“My family and I would like to thank you all for your support with the ideas and initiatives we have done in town. The town gets it shame some of the town council and staff don’t.”
His post on the community Facebook group Llandrindod Solutions has received 123 comments of support from Llandrindod residents at the time of writing, including from the director of the Victorian festival Christopher Hartley.
One resident commented: “Sorry to read you’ve stepped down. You’ve been so committed for the last few years, you must have very good reason to have taken such a decision. A hard act for anyone to follow.”
Cllr Williams said: “I have been overwhelmed by the comments from people in the community, on social media and also from passersby while I’ve been out.
“I don’t feel I’ve done anything special, I’ve just tried to do what’s best for the town so it is overwhelming. I’ve also had people calling me this morning.
“I always knew I had the support of the town. It’s good to know I’ve touched so many hearts.”
The Llandrindod Wells east and west county councillor said it was a “hard and sad decision” for both him and his family, and that they will continue to help the town.
Llandrindod Town Council has not said what it will do yet to replace Cllr Williams who stood down two months before the AGM to elect the mayor for the next municipal year.
