Put down the ice cream and rediscover the raincoat you tucked away in June - the rain is returning to Wales.

Powys residents left their houses this morning to cloudy skies and temperatures around 21 degrees celsius rather than the constant sunshine that has gripped the UK since June.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, the least severe type of warning, across all of Wales and South England for thunderstorms on Friday.

The weather forecasting site said that the warning is in place between 11am and 8pm for "heavy and slow moving" thundery downpours.

Following the yellow warning it said there is a small chance of flooding which could potentially result in damage to buildings, power cuts, and that it could make driving conditions worse.

It said: "There is a good chance driving conditions will at times be affected by spray and standing water, leading to some minor journey delays.

"Some short term loss of power and other services due to lightning strikes is possible."

It is predicted to rain in areas of Powys such as Brecon, Presteigne, Ystradgynlais, and Hay-on-Wye today with temperatures going up to 22°C.

Despite the cloud and rain, the Met Office has advised residents that the temperatures are likely to stay high and that there is still a chance of sun burn from UV rays.

The weather is varied tomorrow, despite similar temperatures around 22°C, with rain showers in areas such as Brecon, Crickhowell, Presteigne, Hay-on-Wye, Talgarth, and Llanwrtyd in the afternoon and early evening.

Ystradgynlais, Builth Wells, Rhayader, and Sennybridge can expect the lightning to start tomorrow evening ahead of Friday.

Despite the much needed rain at the end of the week, the weather will return to dry with sunshine and some clouds over the weekend - temperatures are predicted to rise to a scorching 26°C in some areas.

There is lightning and thunder forecast for Monday in Presteigne and Talgarth along with rain forecast in Brecon, Hay-on-Wye, Llanwrtyd and Sennybridge but in general there is clouding and some sun for most of Powys.

Brecon Mountain Rescue issued a warning this morning to people who might be adventuring into the national park over the weekend.

A spokesman said: "The desperately needed rain may come all at once in the Brecon area this weekend.

"Please take extra care in case of thunderstorms and lightening on high ground, and flash flooding if you’re cooling off in streams and rivers."

Despite the rain, pollen levels will remain at a "moderate level" across Powys during the crossover between the grass pollen season and weed pollen season.
