TRADERS in a market town say they are seeing red over double yellow lines.

Business owners in Talgarth's High Street are angry after Powys County Council refreshed double yellow line parking restrictions in the town as part its civil parking enforcement changes.

The news is a blow for shop owners in the town, who had hoped the restrictions would be lifted as they deter people from parking outside their stores.

The double yellow lines had previously been put in place to help traffic access the A479 before construction of the Talgarth bypass.

But businesses say the double yellow lines are now 'obsolete' and are hindering trade following completion of the bypass in 2007.

Powys County Council says the refreshed lines are part of the authority's civil parking enforcement scheme after it assumed responsibility for imposing parking tickets and fines from the police on April 1.

Whereas parking fines issued by police employed traffic wardens had gone to the Home Office, funds received under the new scheme will now go directly to Powys council.

The council said a review of certain traffic orders in the county, which have been the subject of a long-running moratorium, could take place once new parking regime has settled.
